Alarge number of children under 10 have tested positive for Covid-19 in Sindh and the provincial government is considering the re-imposition of a two-week strict lockdown.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has also recommended a two-week lockdown in the province besides strengthening public health measures such as quarantine, isolation, physical distancing and patient contact tracing etc.

Pakistan reported yesterday a total of 119,536 cases of coronavirus — 5,834 new infections in 24 hours — while the number of deaths stood at 2,356, an increase of 101 in a single day. A total 26,573 tests were conducted across the country.

Children exposed

The adviser to Sindh’s chief minister on law and environment, and spokesperson for the Sindh government, Senator Murtaza Wahab, yesterday announced on his official Twitter account that at least 1,712 children under the age of 10 had tested positive so far in the province while four have died.

“As of today, 1,712 children under the age of 10 have been infected with #COVID19 in #Sindh. Unfortunately, 4 such children have passed away. Our carelessness has exposed our dearest children. Please it’s not too late to change, please stay home for ur children and elders.”

He urged people to stay home to safeguard their own lives and those of their children as well as elderly members of the family.

MPA tests positive

Meanwhile, a member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) of Sindh and president of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Karachi, Khurram Sher Zaman, also announced that he tested positive yesterday.

In a tweet Zaman said he was not feeling well for quite some and had quarantined himself. “Today, I decided to undergo Covid-19 tests and was found infected with virus,” he said.

Ironically, Khurram Sher Zaman has been opposing the implementation of another lockdown in Sindh, particularly

Karachi.

Elsewhere, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) criticised the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) the country’s anti-graft watchdog for repeatedly summoning its president and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif to its headquarters in corruption cases in the days when coronavirus is at its peak. Sharif tested positive

for Covid-19 yesterday.

“NAB was informed multiple times in writing that Shahbaz Sharif has suffered from cancer and compared to other people, his immunity system is weak,” PML-N’s Ataullah Tarar said.
