Director jailed for injuring man’s eye in club brawl

SECURITY OFFICER SUFFERS 20% PERMANENT DISABILITY

-

Apublic relations director has been sentenced to one year in jail for hurling a rock at a security officer’s face and injuring his eye in the course of a scuffle.

The 26-year-old Syrian director, F.B., grabbed the rock and tossed it angrily at the 30-year-old Jordanian security officer, M.F., when they fought at a nightclub in a mall in June 2013. Prosecutors had charged F.B. with assaulting M.F., causing him a 20 per cent permanent disability in his eye.

Meanwhile, M.F. was charged with beating F.B.

The Dubai Court of First Instance jailed F.B. after he was convicted of assaulting M.F. and causing him a permanent disfigurement in his eye.

According to yesterday’s ruling, presiding judge Mohammad Jamal acquitted the Jordanian of assaulting the Syrian for lack of corroborated evidence. Dubai Police’s forensic examiner confirmed that M.F. sustained two injuries in his nose and eye.

Vision affected

Medical reports confirmed that the Jordanian’s nose injury healed within a few days. His eyesight, however, was affected and his vision was slightly impaired. Forensic doctors estimated M.F.’s visual impairment as a 20 per cent permanent disability.

When the duo showed up in court, they pleaded not guilty and each party accused the other of initiating the assault.

M.F. had filed a civil lawsuit in which he sought Dh21,000 in temporary compensation for his injury.

Presiding judge Jamal the civil lawsuit.

The Jordanian told prosecutors that F.B. tossed a hard object at his eye when they had a fight. Records did not specify the reasons why the duo fought.

A policeman testified that the assault took place near a mall in Jebel Ali.

“Once I reached the location, M.F. was getting treatment for his eye injury. He was bleeding. When I asked him what happened, he claimed that the Syrian hurled a rock in his face,” said the policeman.

Yesterday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
