Emirates Woman

Editor’s letter

- Carmel Harrison EDITOR

Fashion’s environmental footprint is one of the largest of any industry in the world. In fact, the apparel industry produces 20 per cent of global water waste and 10 per cent of global carbon emissions, while 21 billion tonnes of textiles are sent to landfills each year. We are now buying more clothes than ever and only wearing them for half as long, and team Emirates Woman are guilty of this too. So, we decided to dedicate our September issue to the sustainability-driven fashion and beauty brands charging the lead for change. On page 86 meet the emerging designers who have built their companies with an ethical mindset. See the vital signs of climate change in our beautiful fashion editorial on page 76 shot against the eroding cliffs of Botany Bay. We discuss ‘green-washing’ in fashion and how sustainability has become

a buzzword in the industry – but what does this actuallly mean? Find out on page 46. And in the beauty section discover how to make your beauty routine more eco-friendlier on page 142.

See Dior and Louis Vuitton’s A/W19 runway collections on pages 94 and 102 and the new season’s trends in our runway edit on page 112.

Turn to page 54 where we reveal the inspiring women who have been nominated for our 2019 Emirates Woman, Woman of the Year Awards and don’t forget to start voting via emirates woman. com.

We hope this issue inspires you to think more conscious ly when you shop. It definitely inspired us!
