GAZANS THE WRONG TARGET

-

Re: “Washington shows signs of strained patience with ally Israel”, (World, Dec 14).

Who is going to pay for the reconstruction of the now bleak and blasted Gazan wasteland and rehabilitation of shell-shocked Gazan society when this ghastly mess ends, if ever?

The Israeli war machine with its considerable support from the Biden Administration in terms of war reparations? I don’t think so.

Mind you, 2,023 years ago when this region was partly known as Judea, it was subject to the heavy tramp of the mighty Roman legions.

However, instead of reducing the area to rubble, despite some heavy-handedness, novel infrastructure and other sometimes dubious but often beneficial aspects of Roman culture were introduced, many of which contributed to the general wellbeing of society at that time.

Now the season of peace on Earth and goodwill to all men shortly celebrates the birth of an enlightened person at that time who most certainly would have things to say about what is currently going on.

Of particular note is the fact that his eventual execution was sought by the leaders of his own people for blasphemy but could only be sanctioned by the Roman governor.

Today, the new generation of these leaders spearheads the destruction of a people who are largely blameless for such vicious retribution in the name of justifiable revenge against an age-old enemy for the atrocities of Oct 7, 2023.

But are they also looking to save face for being complacent while their formerly highly regarded intelligence services and cutting-edge technology were caught napping?
