Tang Contemporary Art doubles its presence in Thailand with a brand-new space relocated to the new premises on the second floor of River City Bangkok. The new gallery will open its doors tomorrow with a reception at 6pm.

To celebrate this occasion, the gallery presents a solo exhibition by Chinese artist Chen Zihao, whose new works will be hung across the spacious area of 420m² until Oct 31.

Titled “Land Art In 2.5 Dimensions”, the collection is a fusion of paintings and mixed-media works, as the artist has chosen to insert materials such as thin, craggy rocks, metal and minerals, or highly saturated blocks of colour into the textures of the paintings.

Zihao primarily uses oil painting to record multiple landscapes that are not present. These works are obviously different from reference land art. He describes the various magnificent scenes that he has experienced, and after re-awakening those memories, he uses thick brushstrokes to present geographic textures.

By combining painterly expressions and found objects, he adjusts the formal language to achieve his goal. This explains why the brightly coloured abstract works that are framed with iron, wood, copper, stainless and coloured acrylic are called 2.5 dimensions. An emerging and enthusiastic artist with international awards under his belt, Zihao, 28, is making a name for himself in the US art scene. Today, he is based in New York, where he has created most of his art works.
