Majestic Marquez on the verge of 6th world crown

- BANGKOK POST/MOTOGP.COM

Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez became the first winner at the Thailand Grand Prix last year and he could be crowned world champion at the event this year.

The five-time MotoGP championship winner sits 98 points ahead of Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso in the current standings with five races remaining.

Marquez has 300 points, Dovizioso 202 and Suzuki’s Alex Rins 156.

The Spaniard only has to gain two points more than Dovizioso at Chang International Circuit on Sunday to claim his sixth championship.

Thanks to his dominant display on home turf at Aragon, Marquez has his first match point of the season this weekend.

The 26-year-old will be crowned champion of 2019, if:

—He wins, regardless of where Dovizioso finishes.

—He finishes 2nd, 3rd or 4th and Dovizioso finishes behind him.

—He finishes 5th and Dovizioso finishes worse than 6th (7th or lower).

—He finishes 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th or 13th and Dovizioso finishes at least two places behind in each case.

—He finishes 14th and Dovizioso doesn’t score any points.

The Honda and Ducati duo duelled until the last corner of the last lap in last season’s epic Buri Ram encounter, with Marquez coming out on top.

Meanwhile, MotoGP riders Jorge Lorenzo of Repsol Honda and Cal Crutchlow of LCR Honda and Moto2 racer Somkiat Chantra of Idemitsu Honda Team Asia yesterday took part in a promotional film shoot on the streets around the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) and the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho) and on the Memorial Bridge.

The trio on Tuesday starred in another TV commercial which was filmed at the King Power Mahanakhon Tower.
