If you’re a fan of Pleats Please Issey Miyake, drop by their duplex store at Siam Discovery for an exclusive limited collection which celebrates the brand’s 10th anniversary in Thailand. Designed specifically for this event and available only in Thailand, the Japanese brand has decided to splash out with the mede-tai motif, representing the Japanese red sea bream. As this fish is a major part of traditional Japanese festivals and is also consumed for its auspiciousness, it’s been chosen for the collection as a symbol of good fortune and celebration. Most importantly, however, the tai was chosen for being a homonym of “Thai”, and to honour its decade in Thailand. Ten different best-selling items in Thailand will use the tai as inspiration, with a main palette of lucky colours such as red, gold, black and white. If you’re looking for that fiery red outfit, there are dresses, sleeveless tops, tunics and cardigans, which suit the upcoming Chinese New Year. There is also a T-shirt print screened with a tai illustration in gold. For less basic flair, the trousers have add-on details on the rims and the back to resemble fish fins. For accessories to complete the look, there is a triangle bag with the tai print, which suits dayto-night use. While Pleats Please does create limited collections every now and then, it is mainly within Japan and usually to mark its store openings and anniversaries. Thai customers are known to have to fly all the way there to get these exclusive items, but this time we’re getting a collection that’s only sold here, thanks to the brand’s popularity on our shores. It is a first for the brand to develop a full-blown collection for Thailand. A Japanese lantern installation also sits outside the store. Visit this photogenic pop-up now, which also features “floating” tai tops on the fountain, as if they were real fish. The collection will be available until Jan 31.
