Alec Baldwin to write a parody Trump memoir

- JOCELYN MCCLURG USA TODAY (TNS)

Alec Baldwin is about to make publishing great again — with a parody presidential memoir written as Donald Trump.

Baldwin, no fan of the new president, has seized the comic (and political) zeitgeist with his squinty-eyed, pouty Saturday Night Live impersonation.

You Can’t Spell America Without Me: The Really Tremendous Inside Story Of My Fantastic First Year As President Donald J. Trump, co-written with novelist and political commentator Kurt Andersen, will be published on Nov 7, Penguin Press announced on Wednesday.

The political satire, the publisher promises, will cover Trump’s “mind-boggling private encounters with world leaders, the genius backroom strategy sessions with White House advisers. His triumphs over the dishonest news media. The historic, world-changing decisions — many of them secret until now. What he really thinks of Melania and Ivanka and Jared, Donald Jr. and Eric and the other one. And many spectacular, historic, exclusive photographs of him in private and public, making America great again”.

Will Trump find any of this amusing? Highly doubtful. The president has criticised SNL and Baldwin’s impression, and the two have engaged in a Twitter war.

“Just tried watching Saturday Night Live — unwatchable!” Trump tweeted in December. “Totally biased, not funny and the Baldwin impersonation just can’t get any worse. Sad.”

Baldwin responded: “Release your tax returns and I’ll stop.”

Baldwin’s own (real) memoir, Nevertheless, will hit stores on April 4.

In an interview in January with USA TODAY’s Bill Keveney, Baldwin said Trump himself provides the best material for the SNL skits.

“He’s our head writer. He provides us with a gift basket of ideas every week,” he said.
