“IIT has helped me see my capabilities, my potential and helped me grow as a person”

With over 3,000 graduates that are currently empowering over 250 multinational and local blue-chip companies, the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) is renowned for producing innovators, entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Kugamoorthy Vethapriyan, popularly known by his friends and colleagues as Priyan is an enterprising graduate from IIT who is currently employed as an Associate Technical Lead at Inova IT Systems ( Pvt) Ltd. Following are excerpts of the interview with Priya who shared his thoughts on his journey towards corporate success;

Can you give a brief introduction to yourself?

I’m Priyan, Currently working as an Associate Technical Lead at Inova IT Systems ( pvt) Ltd. I graduated from IIT in 2015 with a first class honours in Software Engineering from the University of Westminster, UK. I’m also following the Msc in Advanced Software Engineering at IIT.

What made you decide you follow to higher education at IIT?

Both of my siblings are also graduates from IIT and they were one of the main reasons behind me deciding to follow my higher education there. The kind of environment they were in, everything they mention in reference to their time at IIT made me want the same education and academic experience they had. I believe my parents really saw how my siblings were benefiting from IIT, so it was an easy choice. The fast track foundation education programme after O/ L’s was just an added advantage.

How was the student life and experience at IIT?

Personally, I felt that IIT gave equal importance to extracurricular activities as they did to academics. This was very encouraging since most of the time it’s what happens outside the classroom that’s most memorable. There are so many academic and non- academic activities and events that I and many of my friends were part of throughout our years at IIT. Stagecraft, cutting edge, sports meets, Rotaract. The daily carom, TT and COD sessions were the best of the day.

Has IIT shaped you for corporate success?

IIT brings together an amazing bunch of people from all walks of life and to a single place. At IIIT, I was provided the opportunity to work with many different personalities and learnt how to work with them as a team. To understand each of our ups and downs and work towards a common goal. IIT has helped me see my capabilities, my potential and helped me grow as a person.

What are your reasons to recommend IIT to students from your school?

IIT is one of the most recognised institutes in the industry and provides students the opportunity to have a holistic experience. In terms of academics they now have a wider range of courses to pick from. The 3rd year placement/ internship is one of the biggest advantages. It provides a great way to take the first step into one’s career. Also, there are so many events and activities at IIT that help you grow as an individual, as a group of friends and as a batch.

What are your fondest moments at IIT?

There are so many, I don’t even know where to start. I’ve been a part of the stagecraft production ever since I joined IIT, I’ve been in the plays, dances, choir and those practise session hold some of the best memories for me. Rotaract not only gave me the chance to meet peers from other universities and institutes in Sri Lanka but also students from other countries and learn about other cultures too. Be it Avurudu, Pongal or Vesak we would celebrate all religions and culture festivals, all the same - just an excuse for all of us to get together and have fun.

Can you describe the support you received from the staff and the faculty of IIT?

The IIT staff has been very supportive and kind throughout the years. They are very knowledgeable in their respective subject areas, carry vast industry experience and are well versed with up and coming trends and technologies. They have shown steady guidance throughout the years and at most times not only played the role of a teacher or mentor but also a friend.

IIT conducts internal postgraduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Westminster ( UOW), UK and Robert Gordon University. The University of Westminster degrees offered at IIT are Software Engineering, Business Information System, Business Management and Computer Science with specialization pathways in gaming and computer graphics development, mobile and web computing and multimedia computing.
