The International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS) continues to soar in Sri Lankan and South Asian education sectors as it stands out as one of the very few private institutes to offer unique international pathways to courses in Nursing, Physiotherapy, Bio Medical Sciences and Health Administration. Amongst the many programs offered by IIHS, the TAFE Nursing Program which has a duration of one year has been identified as the most rapid way to gain a world class recognition from a renowned health care institute.

The TAFE program offered by IIHS directs students towards an exciting and rewarding career that provides many opportunities in the health care sector. This course at IIHS offers a Certificate in Health Sciences and leads a pathway to TAFE (South Australia) for students to complete a 15 month Diploma in Nursing where they will be eligible to graduate as Enrolled Nurses apply for registration through the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Australia. Amongst the many advantages of this program, the most noticeable benefit includes the ability for a student to obtain a world class qualification with international recognition within a shorter time period. This would in turn serve as a tremendous cost saving to students at an institute which constantly prides itself on its adherence to international standards. Worldwide employability is guaranteed with all nursing programs and Enrolled Nurses are employed in hospitals, community health services, residential care, private homes (home care), industrial sites, schools, medical practices and pathology services. As the global health industry is on the rise employers report large shortages in this field and therefore great opportunities exist in this field.

TAFE (SA) is the leading and largest public provider of vocational education and training (VET) in South Australia, delivering courses to an average of 80,000 students per year across more than 48 sites worldwide. The Diploma of Nursing provides a pathway into a Bachelor of Nursing Degree(2 years in duration) if students choose to practice as a Registered Nurse in Australia. For students that opt to continue to the Bachelor of Nursing, direct pathways exist to the University of South Australia and Deakin University (Victoria).

Entry Requirements for the TAFE program includes the successful completion of G.C.E O/L with minimum passes including Credit passes for English, Mathematics and Science. This pathway is the most cost effective pathway to become a world class nurse as once an individual completes Ordinary Level, through the TAFE program he/she she can follow through to a Diploma and thereby a Degree within a very short period. This course is also suitable for students who have been unsuccessful with G.C.E Advanced Level course.

Ms.Kisara Arambepola (Former Student of Royal Institute), completed her GCE Ordinary Level and completed the Certificate in Health Sciences (through IIHS) at the mere age of 17. Simultaneously, Kisara followed the 6 month Aged Care program at IIHS. At the age of 18, young Kisara completed her Diploma in Nursing in Australia and as she was armed with the Aged Care Certificate she was able to work part time at an Aged Care facility which no doubt supported her financially whilst exposing her to the industry connections. Kisara states, “By completing the TAFE course and the Certificate in Aged Care I was employed instantly and was therefore was able to live an independent life where I supported myself financially whilst studying. It is highly empowering to be able to support myself at this age and I am extremely excited about my global career options”.

Ms. Charitha Ranasinghe ,Former Student of Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, (IIHS alumni and previous TAFE student) currently employed in Australia as a Registered Nurse in the Critical Care setting states, “The opportunity given to me by IIHS has enabled me to gain a world class qualification within a very short time period and gain my Permanent Residency in Australia within a two year period of employment. I have gained the required skills, knowledge and competencies through this course and the financial benefits throughout my career have been immense. I completed the Certificate in Health Sciences in Australia and followed through with my Diploma in Nursing and a 2 year Degree in Nursing to become a Registered Nurse in Australia. Though the duration of my course at IIHS was only one year I was given the opportunity to present my research at a conference in Germany. These opportunities presented to me are very valuable and I would urge other students to consider this program”. Furthermore, , Milan Danushka too followed the Certificate in Health Sciences (TAFE) course through IIHS and with his qualification as an Enrolled Nurse he currently holds the distinguished position as a Nurse in charge of an aged care centre-in-Adelaide Australia.

Mr.Rukmal Kariyawasam (Fromer student of De Mazenod College , a TAFE graduate from IIHS states, “IIHS has provided me the opportunity to achieve my goals in a very short time period. The student life at IIHS ensured that I was groomed to be a strong member in the international health care team. It had forever been my dream to work as a health care professional in Australia and I am certain that with my qualification I can now access other global health care giants. For me, this is money which has been wisely spent to access the global health care industry”.

Dr. KithsiriEdirisinghe (Deputy Chairman, IIHS) states, “We are extremely privileged to have a partnership with TAFE SA as the program ensures that students are able to fast track their nursing career to gain employment in a highly demanded profession. IIHS ensures that standards are at par with the international health care standards and the distinct difference between the TAFE course and other programs in the field is that the TAFE program is the most costeffective program where students are able to achieve their professional goals within a very short period. At IIHS we hope to transform students into wholesome individuals with sound professional skills. Life at IIHS not only includes academia but we encourage students to engage in research and numerous social activities to enhance their critical thinking process and develop solid personalities”.

Ms. Nadeeka Jayasinghe, Deputy Head of Nursing (IIHS), TAFE Coordinator and Australian qualified Registered Nurse further validates Dr. Edirisinghe’s comments by stating, “We strongly believe that the Nursing programs offered by IIHS provides opportunities for students to reach their goals effectively within a very short period of time. Nurses are sought after tremendously and with the current global nursing shortage, employment opportunities are immense for our nurses. The Certificate in Health Sciences offered by TAFE SA has provided ample job opportunities for students where they earn approximately Rs 600,000 – Rs. 700,000 a month. Additionally, we encourage our students to gain the Certificate in Aged Care as their food and lodging expenses in Australia can be covered if they choose to work part time in an Aged Care Nurse whilst pursuing their studies in Australia. Remember, a Nursing qualification in Australia automatically provides students the opportunity to travel and work worldwide and that is priceless”
