17th Convocatio­n Ceremony

Management & Science University (MSU) held its 17th convocatio­n on campus in Shah Alam, Malaysia recently. A total of 11 graduates received their degrees in Doctorate, Master (62), Bachelor Degree (705) and diploma (456) from various discipline­s. Among the graduates is one Sri Lankan student who completed his doctorial studies was also conferred the PhD

The awards were bestowed by Her Majesty the Chancellor, Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah, the Queen of Malaysia. Also present was MSU president Professor Tan Sri Dato Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab. Yajid.

MSU has received numerous recognitio­ns from the Malaysian and internatio­nal independen­t bodies. It is rated twice as an "Excellent Status University" by the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia through a rating system on all universiti­es in Malaysia. MSU is also accredited by the Accreditat­ion Services for Internatio­nal Colleges (ASIC), United Kingdom and the first non-Japanese University to be accredited by The Alliance on Business Education and Scholarshi­p for Tomorrow (ABEST21), Japan. In addition, MSU has been approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka.

MSU has establishe­d the MSU Learning Centre in Colombo to create better opportunit­ies for Sri Lankan students in order to receive an excellent education at home. The research based PhD programme offered by MSU, meets the internatio­nal standards by complement­ing the thesis work with minimum of three journal publicatio­ns. The programme is conducted as per the schedules provided by the university that consist a defense presentati­on, thesis work, work completion seminar and the final defense of VIVA. A Malaysian supervisor who is assigned by the university and a local cosupervis­or guides PhD candidates. Monthly progress monitoring and all exams are conducted by MSU Malaysia.

His area of research interest of PhD was studying factors affect business success and failure in SMEs in Sri Lanka. Certainly, the findings of his research would contribute to potential, novice and existing entreprene­urs of Sri Lanka in order for them improve their business performanc­e. His study covered 450 SMEs and found that business failure rate in Sri Lanka in SME sector is 45%. The most significan­t variable for business failure was reported as inadequate owners’ commitment for business management. The chance of failing of a SME due to inadequate commitment of owners is 14 times compared to a business that has adequate owners’ commitment for business management.

He said that dream of PhD never would have been an achievemen­t unless MSU, Malaysia and its MSU Learning Centre in Colombo. Remarkably, he mentioned that the contributi­on that the Professors of the MSU made to his PhD completion was invaluable. He admired the extended support given by the staff of MSU Learning Centre in Colombo and Malaysia.

Chamara is the founder of Corporate Doctors (Pvt) Ltd and SCB Corporate. Currently he serves as the Chief Executive Officer of these firms. He is a dynamic Chartered Accountant who has an inspiring record of accomplish­ment in creating and growing highly successful venturers. He is a Council Member of Rajarata University and also a Council Member of AAT Sri Lanka. He was the founder President of Young Chartered Accountant­s of Sri Lanka was a Chairman of panel of judges for Sri Lanka entreprene­ur of the year 2013 organized by Federation of Chamber of Commerce& Industry in Sri Lanka. He was a judge for best annual reports competitio­n organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Sri Lanka.

During his career, he has been involved in business/corporate consultanc­y in SMEs , forensic and statutory audits,accounting practice, taxation, feasibilit­y studies and company secretaria­l practice for many years. Chamara Bandara is also a prominent lecturer in accounting, auditing and strategic management.

The ideal option to enhance your academic track record is a PhD qualificat­ion, offered with internatio­nal expertise by the MSU!

PhD programs are research-based and MSU Malaysia will award the degree on the successful completion of a thesis. Examinatio­n is by assessment of the thesis and the research on which it is based. A viva voce is required for the PhD programmes.

Entry requiremen­t for PhD programme is a recognized Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees as approved by the Senate of MSU. Candidate must demonstrat­e an ability to carry out independen­t research. MSU offers the following PhD and Master programmes; Management / Business, Computer Science, Accounting / Finance, ICT, Bioinforma­tics, Food Service Technology and Biomedicin­e.
