Today’s world revolves entirely around Technology where they are integrated in every aspect of business in every Industry, deeming it being very necessary for any person involved in a career to have a thorough knowledge of the subject . Information systems therefore are the foundation for conducting business today. In many industries, survival and even existence without extensive use of IT is inconceivable, and IT plays a critical role in increasing productivity. Although information technology has become more of a commodity, when coupled with complementary changes in organization and management, it can provide the foundation for new products, services, and ways of conducting business that provide firms with a strategic advantage.

Keeping inline with these requirements is the BSc (Hons) Information Systems with Business Management ( ISBM) Degree offered at the Informatics Institute of Technology ( IIT- www. iit. ac. lk) as a qualifying internal degree from the University of Westminster (UOW) UK.

The aim of this course is to develop you to be a leader in your organization, enabling the full benefits of modern technology to be realised. The course is interdisciplinary and you will learn about information systems alongside the core areas of business and management which are at the heart of this course. The course will prepare you to make critical high-level decisions and to back these up with the best information gathering and deployment methods. You will also develop your ability to analyse problems logically and apply appropriate decision-making skills and knowledge to reach feasible, realistic conclusions.

The first year at IIT under this course would see students learning the basic fundamentals of both subject disciplines – Information Systems and Business Management. Programming, Business Mathemat i c s, Requirement Analysis, Information and Data Modeling, and Principles of Marketing form the core of the first year’s syllabus. The second year graduates the students follow Business Information Systems Design and Development, Project Mana g e m e n t , O p e r a t i o n s Management and Finance and Human Resource Management, as well as professional practice. These subjects are the foundation that is necessary to equip the students for their third year which is the placement year. The most important and unique placement year sees students in industry related organizations experiencing practical manifestations of what they have been learning. Being able to observe the practical application of their course and further enhance their knowledge on the same has been of invaluable experience and benefit to IIT students. This wealth of information is of added benefit during their final year of study as they can channel their practical experience into subjects such as Information System Quality and Testing, Business Strategy, Managing Business Organizations and Information System Strategy as well as their final year project. These projects are often extremely pragmatic in their approach and delivery as the student is aware of the outside working world and its environment. As such the project is of a high standard, often at Industry level.

The key objective of the ISBM degree is to develop multidisciplinary professionals who can understand the business challenges in functional units such as Marketing, Finance, Human Resources and Operations Management. Being able to observe the practical application of their course and further enhance their knowledge on the same has been of invaluable experience and benefit to IIT students. Further, this degree is also designed to produce graduates who will be able to integrate their ICT skills with their knowledge of business operations and management to support an enterprise to achieve competitive advantage.
