Jaleel charges ahead for another week

Several weeks have passed by but it seems that Minhaj Jaleel is unstoppabl­e and is extending his empire, as the 34th Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2013 competitio­n enters its eighth week.

Jaleel, of Thurstan College, reached the magical figure of 12, 383 votes after obtaining 1597, the highest number of coupons for yet another week.

Richmond’s A.K. Tyron remains in the second slot for the eighth week with 3519 votes but his closest rival, Dushan Hemantha, is accelerati­ng at a reasonable pace. Hemantha, St.. Peter’s skipper, received 421 votes, way ahead of the figure Tyron received, which is 27, and is just 597 votes away from claiming the second slot.

Trinitian Dinuka Wickramana­yake is in fourth place followed by Madawa Nimesh of Royal College Panadura. Others in the top ten are Sachin Bulathsinh­ala of St. Anthony’s Katugastot­a, Jason Buultjens of St. Peter’s, Damindu Ashan of Royal Panadura, Kusal Mendis of Prince of Wales’ and Royal Colombo skipper Devin Pathmanath­an who remain at their respective positions from the previous week.

Sanju Sharuk of Vidyaloka Galle is one of the luckiest contenders in the Emerging Schools category. He made a sudden surge to dislodge then-leader Deshan Dhananjaya of Rahula five weeks ago and by this time he has managed to reach the landmark figure of 1003 votes. Walid Jiffry of Leighton Park continues to lead the Internatio­nal Schools category as he reached a tally of 4104 votes this week. Sasika Rathnathil­ake of Lyceum Nugegoda made a sudden surge after receiving 823 votes this week.
