LG Electronics swings to Q3 profit on surprise handset result
LG Electronics Inc, Korea’s renowned manufacturer of electronics and home
appliances, swung to a surprise third-quarter profit as its mobile phone business
reported a welcome return to the black on a stronger product line-up. LG’s July
to September operating profit recorded 221 billion won ($200.3 million) from a
32 billion won loss a year ago, above consensus forecast of 172 billion won by 13 analysts surveyed by Reuters.
LG is the world’s third largest mobile phone manufacturer and the global leader
in mobile touch phones sales sky rocketted in the third quarter of this year as
unprecedented demand in Asia lifted its global market share.
LG’s increased sales performance of their mobile phones comes in the wake of
strong speculation that the mobile market had been expected to shrink amid
the global economic downturn, leaving handset makers striving to prop up sales
by focusing on a few growth areas such as smartphones and emerging markets.
