Data analytics expert from India recently called on local businesses to start valuing their data and incorporate into their business processes information technology (IT), so that they can be a part of the disruption wave that is taking place across the world today.

With data, and the manner it helps add value to businesses, being acknowledged as a key differentiator for organizations regardless of their size, Chief of Whiteklay Technologies, one of the leaders in big data analytics and services market in India, stressed it is imperative for data to be given due emphasis.

“Every organization has a lot of data for which value has still not been attached; till we don’t do that, that piece of data cannot be used. Needed for leaders of organizations to drive a culture in and outside their respective entities, and in the way they do business,” said Whiteklay Technologies President and GM Amit Kumar Parija while addressing senior IT professionals in Colombo recently.

“Till the time we don’t start valuing data internally in the organization, we will never be able to use it for our consumers, citizens and governments,” said Parija during his speech at the second Digital Leadership Forum organized by the Federation of Information Technology Industry Sri Lanka (FITIS).

The data expert asserted that businesses should learn to capitalize features of the ever evolving IT, that today has grown to become an element that collaborates with business to help reach the goals, as opposed to the supporting role it played in the late 80s and early 90s.

“Today it is a tech led differentiation. It all starts with information technology, and if we don’t have this element, then we are left behind,” stressed Parija.

The Whiteklay Technologies head also pointed out that companies are not as fast at prototyping systems as they should be and, therefore is an essential area that needs much attention.

He professed that fast prototyping means fast pace, which in turn means there is enough time to develop and perfect technology.

“We need to learn the mechanism of coming out of the ‘legacy’ mindset and going into a world of augmentation and disruption. Those who are stuck with legacy tend to slow down in prototyping.

“It is about moving out of the current system and embracing a new mechanism as fast as possible,” Parija said.

Furthermore, the IT expert stressed that businesses should actively look at recognizing the need to have the right skills to help take over the responsibility of analyzing data which in turn would help business grow.

“Chief Data Officer, Chief Agility Officer; such roles are necessary to help a business transform, and ride the disruption wave. Without such business would not make the required progressed at the necessary pace,” opined Parija.
