A crafty thief has tried to get the better of a servo in New Zealand by making a number plate reading ‘IOU’ before he stole petrol.

The man driving a silver car pulled into a Caltex, in Canterbury, on Thursday before making off with the fuel.

The service station then posted a still image from their CCTV footage to Facebook, asking if anyone recognised the driver or the car. ‘Morning everyone, we need your help! This lovely chap came onto our forecourt and filled up his car Tuesday evening but he seems to have forgotten to pay,’ the caption to the picture reads.

‘Unfortunately he has something covering his face and not just one but both of his plates and we are struggling to track him down. If anyone recognizes anything about this car or the driver please get in touch! Feel free to share.’ The incident happened about 6.30pm on Tuesday and the man made off with $80 worth of petrol.

The man in the picture can be seen wearing a white sweatshirt with the hood up and black shorts.

Those who viewed the post said that while the theft was obviously wrong, they were impressed at the effort the petrol bandit had gone to.

‘Love the number plate,’ one person said.

‘IOU covering his number plate wow’. another said.

‘I think he deserves it. I’m sure he will come back eventually. I mean he said IOU. Who doesn’t pay an IOU,’ a third person added.

‘Even though petrol runs aren’t rare these days.. having someone going to the trouble of making his own IOU licence plate is rare’ . another person said.
