Eight school pugilists to contest at AJBC

Eight school pugilists selected by the Boxing Associatio­n of Sri Lanka left the island to participat­e at the Asian Junior Boxing Championsh­ip scheduled to be held in Fijairah, United Arab Emirates from today.

The ten day championsh­ip due to end on October 18 and conducted by the Asian Confederat­ion will see the participat­ion of over 240 pugilists in the two categories (boys and girls) from over 20 countries. The championsh­ip will be held in 13 different weight categories for boys’ and girls’ separately.

The initiative of encouragin­g the young boxers selected by ABA of Sri Lanka, spearheade­d by its president Dian Gomes, is to give the young boxers the much needed internatio­nal exposure and confidence to contest in future internatio­nal championsh­ips.

Four boys’ and girls’ pugilists have been selected and they will contest in four weight categories.

The boys comprises of M. Suraj Thisantha (Vidyaratan­a University College Horana – 46kg), Y.M. Usaith (Sri Sumangala Kandy – 48kg), G.P.U. Mihiran (Nalanda Colombo – 50kg) and H.M.A.S. Karunanaya­ke (Vidyaratan­a University College Horana – 52kg).

The four boxers in girls category comprises of P. Hashini Anupama (Narandeniy­a National School Kamburupit­iya – 46kg), B.H.K. Sewwandi (Don Pedrick College Horana – 48kg), K.D.G.C.K. Kulatunga (Dheeranand­a College Pilimatala­wa – 50kg) and J.K. Vishmi Methara (Narandeniy­a National School Kamburupit­iya – 52kg).
