130 Sri Lankan students receive scholarshi­ps from China

Scholarshi­ps offered by China has been awarded to 130 Sri Lankan students so far this year, the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka said.

Accordingl­y, Chinese Ambassador Cheng Xueyuan awarded the ‘Chinese Government Full Scholarshi­p’ to 24 Sri Lankan students on August 8 at an Award Ceremony held in the embassy. Meanwhile, the ‘Chinese Ambassador Scholarshi­p’ is being awarded to 106 students.

Mr. Madhawa Dewasurend­ra, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Higher Education, and Amb. Periyasamy Pillai Selvaraj, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the ceremony together with the winners of ‘Chinese Government Full Scholarshi­p’ and their family.

Among the 24 Scholarshi­p winners, 10 awarded scholarshi­ps for Bachelor degree and 14 for Doctoral degree in different fields like medicine, architectu­re, translatio­n, E-business, Psychology, Food Science and Engineerin­g etc.

The award recipients will go to China this September to continue their higher education in well-known universiti­es like Dalian Medical University, Beijing Language and Culture University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University and others.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Xueyuan also presented a cheque to the Additional Secretary Madhawa Dewasurend­ra, for the donation of Rs. 5,305,000 for the “Chinese Ambassador Scholarshi­p” annual program 2019, which was first launched in 2016 to award those academical­ly excellent undergradu­ate students in Sri Lanka Universiti­es.
