Sad plight of crematoriums in the Moratuwa Municipal area

- TEXT & PICS BY REKHA THARANGANI FONSEKA

The Koralawella Crematorium which was renovated under a tight budget is once again unusable, as the door of the crematorium could not be closed while a body was being cremated.

JVP Municipal Council Member Nishantha Fernando said that even though the issue was brought to the notice of the council, nothing had been done. “We brought the issue before the council but the Mayor came up with a few nice stories about this and said the work is given to the relevant people but there have been no tangible results since,” he said.

Speaking at the monthly council meeting, the councillor went on to say that the crematorium had been out of order for a long time. The same situation, where the burner stopped working while a body was being cremated, had occurred even when the Municipal Council was under the purview of the Municipal Commissioner.

The watcher of the Crematorium has taken steps to burn the dead bodies and there were problems in the crematorium such as leaking gas, difficulty to close the door of the crematorium and flames leaking from the burner.

The Officers have not done their duty properly, although they were ready to take the responsibility, MMC Pradeep Nishantha said.

The Moratuwa Mayor said there are a few repairs that would be completed in the next week.

He further said that it is required to complete the repairs of the Koralawella Crematorium urgently as the Egodauyana Crematorium is also out of order.
