Yasa nominated for Asian post
Ending months of speculation, Sports Ministry yesterday nominated current chief of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka, Yasa Ramachandra to replace another Sri Lankan Laxmi Victoria as president of the Asian Netball Federation.
The Annual General Meeting of the Asian Netball Federation will be held on December 21, 2015 to elect its next set of office bearers in Hong Kong.
Victoria was earlier tipped to lead the Asian Federation for a second term after she was nominated by the local association, but the Sports Ministry had decided to nominate Ramachandra instead, after Trixi Nanayakkara entered the race, nominated by the State Services Netball Association.
Reports reaching Daily Mirror however say that the Ministry had asked Victoria to withdraw her nomination since she has not met the required qualification under the Sports Law while it is not clear as to why the name of Nanayakkara was rejected.
Nanayakkara who is disappointed by the Sports Ministry’s decision says she would take appropriate actions to rectify the issue.
“I wouldn’t have sent my name had I known Ramachandra was interested in the job. She never wanted it before. I think this was done to eliminate me,” Nanayakkara said.
