Layton Cup Boxing Meet from today
The Layton Cup boxing meet for men and women conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka will get underway at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium boxing ring from today onwards.
This will be the 71st in the series which began way back in 1942 and the five day meet is scheduled to end on July 21 where the finals in the men’s and women’s categories are scheduled to be worked off.
The pugilists eligible to participate will be winner and runner up of the Novice, Intermediate, Stubbs Shield and the Junior National Championships. Added to these any boxer who has participated in any major boxing meets conducted by the ABA could also take part.
All boxers, to be eligible to participate, should be over 19 and under 40 years of age. But this year due to regulations set by the AIBA, boxers from schools will not be allowed to participate.
Another interesting factor is that will be the first boxing meet at national level where the boxers in the men’s category will contest without the aid of the head guard.
This was a rule introduced by the AIBA recently where according to international rules it is compulsry that a medical team along with a qualified doctor should be in attendance.
According to sources with many up and coming boxers due to take part a keen tussle could be witnessed in the five day boxing meet. Pugilists from the three forces Army, Navy and Air

Force along with renowned club Slimline BC will be fielding strong candidates.
In the men’s category the boxers to take note of will be Saman Silva, M.P.S. Karunaratne, H.S. Dhanushka, M.M. Prabashwara, Amila Nuwan who won a bronze medal in Pakistan, M.Y.M. Dilshan, A.R.B.E. Tilekeratne, I.B.P. Ratnadivakara, R.G.S. Kumarasinghe and W.S.K. Fernando.
In the women’s category the Sithari Sandareka, I. Udyangani, N. Shiromali who won a bronze medal at the Asian Women’s Championship in Mongolia, A.A. Nilanthi and G.H.T.N. Dharmasena.
The preliminary weighing and the medical examination of those participating is scheduled to take place on July 17 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium from 8.00 a.m. to 10.00 a.m.
The men’s bout will be conducted over three rounds of three minutes be each while the women’s bouts will of four rounds of two minutes each with a one minute break.
The chief guest at the closing ceremoniy will be K.V. Dharmadasa, former President of ABA and former Vice President of Boxing Referees and Judges Association.
