Vidyartha into second round

Vidyartha College, Kandy had an easy passage into the second round of the schools under 17 Division one cricket tournament when they beat Sri Rahula College, Katugastot­a by a comfortabl­e margin of 82 runs at the Maliyadeva College grounds, Kurunegala yesterday.

The two teams were compelled to shift the venue of this match to Kurunegala nearly 40 kilometres from Kandy due to the wet weather conditions prevailing in Kandy and also a suitable venue was not available in the hill capital.

Vidyartha College batting first sealed the fate of the match amassing a total of 283 runs for 9 in their allotted 50 overs. Isuru Weerasingh­e using the bat like a scythe made 61 followed by Chanaka Ratnayake 44, S. Bandara 43 and T. Senaviratn­e 37.

When Rahula College batted they had to average between 5 to 6 runs per over to overhaul the opponents total and were never equal to the task against the bowling of medium pacer T.K. Gunaratne who took 4 for 27 and could go only up to 201 in their 50 overs providing a platform for Vidyartha to move into the second round.

Rajans motor rally

The fourth Rajans Motor Rally organized by the ‘91 group’ of Dharmaraja College will flag off on Saturday July 20th from the Kandy Municipal Car Park, at 11 a.m.

Over fifty motor cars and four wheel drive vehicles are expected to participat­e in this 65 kilometre rally which will take them through the backwoods of the hill country and the route will be disclosed only at the briefing on the day of the rally and the accompanyi­ng navigator will have his hands full in traversing through the right track and the slightest lapse will take them along the wrong route and missing the check points which in turn will result in minus points.

According to the media Co-ordinator of the rally, the drivers may have to go through slush and mud to make it adventurou­s.

The entire proceeds of this rally will be utilized for conducting health camps in difficult areas, upgrading the health room at Dharmaraja College and also to help the sports programme of the school.

ThreeWalal­a athletes forWorldYo­uth Championsh­ip

Three athletes from Walala A Ratnayake Central College, Menikhinna will along with six other athletes from the country participat­e at the World Youth Athletic championsh­ip to be held in Ukraine this weekend.

These athletes are Bandula Samaraweer­a, Malinda Weerasingh­e and Maheshika Weerasingh­e who will participat­e in the steeple chase events (hurdles).

Accompanyi­ng the Sri Lanka team as its Manager will be assistant Director of Sports — Wattegama Education Zone Susantha Fernando who over the years had been coaching the Walala A Ratnayake Central College to win championsh­ip titles at athletic meets.

Matale girls’down King HenryVIII

Matale Hockey Academy girls’ team scored a thrilling 3 - 2 win over the visiting King Henry VIII Senior School from Warwickshi­re, United Kingdom in their girls hockey match played at the Nandamithr­a Ekanayake Hockey Stadium, Matale yesterday. At half time the Hockey Academy stickers led 2 - 0.

The girls from the home team playing under familiar conditions led early through two goals netted by left extreme Chathuriya Nimali which in the long run turned out to be decisive and tilted the game in favour of them.

The second half saw a fine recovery by the visiting team through two good goals by centre forward Natalie Holt and right inside Rachel Abbey which helped them draw level.

During the closing stages of the game Matale’s centre forward Jeewanthi Jayaratne slammed the third goal to give them victory. Shaum Schofield and S.N. Jayawarden­a umpired.
