Absconding exorcist handed over to police

A suspect who had allegedly cheated Rs.1.1 million from a farmer family in Lunugamveh­era with the pretext of giving blessings to their family was handed over to the police by a daughter of the same family when she met him after four years, it was reported from Koggala in the Habaraduwa area.

The aggrieved party had made their first complaint to the Galle police in January 2009.

When the father and son from Lunugamveh­era had gone to Matara to buy the electrical fittings for their new house, they met a person who became friendly with them and said he could predict with the help of god and he said that it was a bad period for them and their new house. Accepting his ideas the father agreed to get relief from him. Accordingl­y one day he came to their house and said there was a treasure buried under the jak tree which was in front of their house.

While digging near the jak tree they found a small bronze box which contained some blue coloured little stones in it. He advised them not disclose it to anyone and also wanted Rs.1.1million to be kept in an almirah and said it

should not be opened for a few days. The exorcist slept in the room where the money was kept.

They have got the money by pawning their own house.

A few days later he had gone to town to collect the necessary items to perform his act of exorcism. When he didn’t return the house owner had opened the almirah but could not find the money.

They had made a complaint at the Galle Police Special Criminal Investigat­ion Unit.

However their daughter who was lodging at a hostel in Galle met the absconding suspect also at the same hostel serving as a security guard at a garment factory in Koggala. After identifyin­g the suspect she had handed him over to the Lunugamveh­era police with the assistance of others living in the hostel.
