The National Movement for Social Justice met with some 70 organisations including lawyers, trade unions, civil groups, religious groups and leaders to discuss the measures to be taken to address the issues.

“Various questions were raised on the issue and we discussed how to collectively face the challenges that already existed and could prevail in the future,” a spokesman for the movement Dr. Ranjith Cabral said.

A special committee headed by Ven. Sobitha Thera and comprising eight members would draft a short document which would be released to the public to create public awareness on the threat to the judiciary. They would distribute leaflets around the country. The document would also highlight their concerns about the Chief Justice’s impeachment. “The intention is to create awareness among people on matters concerning the judiciary. Fairness and justice was not given to the Chief Justice but this has nothing to do with her. It is a natinal concern relevant to everyone,” he said.
