NCP gets new Zonal Education Directors

Three officers have been appointed to the posts of Zonal Education Directors in the North Central Province (NCP) according to the order given by the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission that qualified officers should be appointed to the Education Administra­tive Service in the North Central Province.

These appointmen­ts were made by the NCP Education Secretary on the recommenda­tions made by the NCP Public Service Commission.

Accordingl­y K. Abeysunder­a has been appointed to the post of Anuradhapu­ra New Zonal Education Director while K.N. Jayatilake was appointed to the post of Thambuthth­egama New Zonal Education Director and Upali Jayalath was appointed to the post of Kebithigol­lewa New Zonal Education Director. They are senior officers at the Education Administra­tive Service Grade II.

The Lanka Teachers’ Union had produced a petition a few years ago to the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission to appoint qualified officers to the posts of North Central Province Education Administra­tive Service by

As a result of the petition, the Human Rights Commission ordered to appoint qualified officers to the relevant posts according to the rules and regulation­s, after publishing notices in the news papers and calling for interviews

removing the officers who were appointed to the same posts through political favoritism.

The respondent­s of the petition were Government Officers including the North Central Province Public Service Commission Secretary, Governor’s Secretary, Chief Secretary and the Provincial Education Director.

As a result of the petition, the Human Rights Commission ordered to appoint qualified officers to the relevant posts according to the rules and regulation­s, after publishing notices in the news papers and calling for interviews.

Lanka Teachers’ Union Chairman Priyantha Fernando and its Secretary Joseph Stalin had again gone to court as the orders were not implemente­d by the respondent­s.

Thereafter, the court had ordered the NCP Public Service Commission to appoint suitable officers immediatel­y to the posts in the Education Administra­tive Service.
