First fish reflexology Treatment Centre opens in SL
Breaking new ground in Spa treatments is the first ever Fish Reflexology Treatment facility which opened its doors this month at Ronan International Centre, in Narehenpita. The facility known as Dr. Fish is similar to spas available in Singapore.
“The initial facility in Sri Lanka is a novel concept, a first of its kind in the local tourism/leisure section,” said Rohan Nanayakkara, Chairman of R-Group International which operates Sri Lanka’s first Destination Mall among other companies. “Although this may sound new to Sri Lankans, the concept of Fish Reflexology Treatments have been around for ages. In other parts of Asia like Singapore, fish in Turkish Spa’s are a common sight.”
Visitors are requested to place their feet or hands in the tank, where the fish swim up and gently nibble on your hands/feet giving you the sense similar to that of a subtle vibration. Doctor Fish is the name given to a special species of fish. Other names include nibble fish, kangal

and doctorfishen; in non-medical context it is called the reddish log sucker. They live and breed in outdoor pools of Spas where they feed on dead and affected areas of the skin. The fish consume only the dead skin areas, exfoliating them to reveal a smoother and healthier skin. The treatment is considered to be an effective and innovative way to pamper your feet.
As of recent Doctor Fish Reflexology Centres have opened up in Hakone, Japan, Croatia and Singapore. They are also used in Spa’s in China such as Hainan, Thailand, Turkey and the trend is fast moving into Europe and North America where it continues to lure in tourists.
Before customers can step into the tank, cream, lotion or other cosmetic products are removed before they expose their feet or hands to the fish. Customers with open wounds or skin diseases are not
advised to try this treatment.
