MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS REJECT MINISTER’S DECISION
The minister’s statement says a lot about our country’s system of governance
Medical professionals and academics on Thursday charged that Higher Education Minister S.B Dissanayake had gone against the wishes of a special committee appointed by the Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena on the controversial private medical college located in Malabe.
Minister Dissanayake addressing parliament on Wednesday said that he would not close down the college even if the college did not receive Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) recognition.
The Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) said that the minister had gone against the wishes of the special committee headed by Health Ministry Secretary Ravindra Ruberu and other medical experts who had pointed out in their committee report that the institution could not receive SLMC approval and that the students would have to seek alternate methods of completing their med- ical degrees.
Responding to Minister Dissanayake’s statement in parliament FUTA President Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri said that his statement was a reflection of the minister’s policies. “The minister’s statement says a lot about our country’s system of governance.
