A foolish statement, says Dayasiri

- BY HAFEEL FARISZ

UNP parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara responding to the call for a mandate from the people on the Geneva resolution by Minister Wimal Weerawansa said the request was a “foolish one and wouldn’t solve the mess the country had got itself into”. “This is as foolish as someone can get. Firstly we know how this government has repeatedly won elections;

they have done everything illegal and taken the real wish of the people away. Secondly at this juncture how could a fresh poll solve any of the issues with regard to the resolution?” he asked.

Mr. Jayasekara said the country was now at a critical juncture with international opinion being turned against the government.

“For the first time due to the continuous hoodwinking of the government, a proud nation like ours have been made to take instructions from world powers. The fact that this government roused the people and hid behind the veil of an ‘international conspiracy’ did not help with the vote. The resolution was passed. What should be done now is to adhere to what has been called for instead of going around making foolish statements” he said.

The Kurunegala district MP further said the international community was not against the country but against the incum- bent regime. “The continuous and blatant violations of human rights by the government, the continuous hoodwinking of the international community, the intimidations and threats that continued to this day openly even by a government Minister has to stop first. This will at least help our country’s credibility” he said.

He also said even in the event of the government winning a fresh mandate comprehensively, the tide against Sri Lanka by the international community wouldn’t be hindered. “Let’s say they hold an election, use all their power to win. Would it change a thing in the minds of the international community? Would it help solve any problem?” he asked The law of the jungle will not scare the International community, Mr. Jayasekara said. “The law of the jungle might work in this country but we can’t continue to use it against the international community because it won’t scare them away"
