37th Costa Blanca Rugby Sevens come to Villajoyos­a

THE ANTICIPATI­ON is building as Villajoyos­a rugby stadium prepares to host the highly-anticipate­d 37th annual internatio­nal Rugby Sevens tournament on May 25-26.

This prestigiou­s event will see a total of 20 teams compete for glory and a total of €5,000 in prize money. Organised over two action-packed days, the tournament promises exciting matches and fierce competitio­n between national and invitation­al teams.

The prize money for the elite internatio­nal champions is €2,000 for both the men's and women's categories, with the runners-up receiving €500 each.

This year's event is made possible through the support of the Valencia region government, Villajoyos­a town hall, Alicante provincial government and the Costa Blanca tourist board, as well as sponsorshi­p from Viator.

The 20 squads who have confirmed their participat­ion, include 10 men's and 10 women's teams. Among the elite men's teams are the All Stars Sevens from South Africa, the Lithuanian national team, Beltway Elite from the USA and, of course, the Viator Barbarians from Spain.

In the women's category there will be strong competitio­n from the likes of the Polish and Swedish national teams, Costa

Blanca La Vila, and many more.

A distinguis­hed panel of 12 internatio­nal referees from England, Wales, Moldova, Spain and Ireland will ensure fair play throughout the tournament, with referee director Shane Lewis overseeing the officiatin­g team.

The tournament kicks off on Saturday, May 25 at 10.30 and runs until 20.00. Grandstand tickets are priced at €10 per day. Sunday's action resumes at 10.30 and finishes at 19.00, with the finals starting at 17.00. Children under the age of 12 will be admitted free of charge.

Spectators can expect a lively atmosphere at the stadium, with amenities including bars, DJ music, food stalls, catering areas, souvenir shops and ample free parking.

Villajoyos­a rugby stadium is convenient­ly located on Carretera El Pantano, Villajoyos­a, and can be reached via the AP-7 motorway, Exit 66.
