Phew… just one more point!

IF us supporters have learned anything about our health this season, it's that our hearts are strong and in working order.

Because following CD Montesinos we have all needed our hearts to be in tip-top condition, due to the way that the team has made us suffer.

This weekend, we travelled to another one of our rivals, Sporting Albatera - who had beaten us earlier in the season.

So revenge was the order of the day. Revenge and, of course, the small matter of the three points up for grabs three points that would put us within touching distance of the group winners and automatic promotion. A large, passionate and noisy crowd turned up at Albatera, including a healthy smattering of Monte fans.

The game started in the best possible way for the league leaders, when in the first few minutes a free kick played into the Albatera penalty area was headed home by (who would be man of the match Ousamma, to give Monte the perfect start.

But, as is usual for us this season, we dropped back somewhat and tried to defend our lead, although twice on the break Monte could have increased their lead, without success.

Just before half-time, an Albatera free kick into the Monte box was not cleared and despite keeper Pablo almost working a miracle to keep the ball out, the home team equalised.

The second half was a fantastic 45 minutes of football, as both sides went all out for a win.

In all honesty, had I been a neutral watching this game it would have been a ‘cracker’.

Alas, being a Monte fan, it was anything but. Both sides had chances, yet somehow (and I still cannot work out how), substitute Diego managed to lob the home keeper (with his back to goal) for the winning goal in the 91st minute of the game.

Cue wild celebrations by the players, coaching staff and the 150 or so Monte supporters.

The final three minutes of extra time were as stressful as it has been all season. But when

nd the referee blew the final whistle, once again, we all went wild.

Of course, even after this win, the top spot has yet to be decided.

CD Montesinos now need one more point, with two matches to play, to seal top spot in the league and automatic promotion.

Easy I hear you mutter. Well, I suppose it should be in theory. But theory does not win you any points, especially when you consider that this weekend we play our nearest rivals in the league, second-placed Guardamar, and we finish the season away at our biggest historical rivals, San Miguel.

So, two really tough games. Two games knowing that just one point will clinch the championship for the first time in the club’s history - on the year of our 50th anniversary to boot!

The Guardamar encounter is at home this coming Sunday, kick-off at 18.30.

If there is a match not to miss, this is the one. Be there and (hopefully) be part of our history.

We need as many people at this last home game as possible. Your support will be vital so please try to attend.

Vamos Monte!
