There will always be an England

-

October 1 I have just thought how the Irish border problem might be solved and give England the freedom to make a good Brexit deal.It is time for England to remember Agincourt, Crecy and Poitiers.

England can be great again; all that needs to be done is get rid of the Irish problem. They are at present like the tail wagging the dog. Besides they voted to remain anyway.

In addition, while England remembers her worth get rid of Scotland. They voted to stay in the EU and do nothing but moan about being neglected. Good riddance. It is time for the English to go it alone without these malcontents.

An afterthought I nearly included Waterloo in the list of battles and remembered Picton . Of course, the Welsh Irish and Scots were there but it was an Englishman who won the Battle.

Dear Editor please do not publish my name as it will only confirm to those who know me that I have a twisted sense of humour and secondary school problems perfectly. I see you have some misconceptions that are quite common so allow me to solve them.

Firstly, you criticise the school hours because, in your opinion, they are too few. Have you ever tried to have a 6 year-old seated during 2 hours? I bet you can’t do it. Imagine it multiplied per 25 children. Let me remind you where we are: South of Europe. It is hot and it gets hotter after noon. Climate change is not helping, either.

So students have to suffer heat waves and learn at the same time. In other parts of the world, they have air conditioning but, as you may know, our region is underfunded and it is impossible to tackle the problem. In recent years, I have seen many students faint and we had to send them home after having a heat stroke. Our solution today is to let students have less school time. Provided with the necessary air conditioning equipment, we could extend learning hours.

Secondly, you miss the whole point of going to school. Students learn subjects but it is a secondary matter. The main goal of school is socialisation. Students have to discover how to behave in society. They come as little kings from their homes and have to learn to respect other people’s opinions, be educated, work in teams and make friends.

Last but not least, you think Valencian language is not necessary. Remember what I said about socialisation? Valencian is not spoken in a far country. It is spoken in our region so students have to know how to communicate with their peers.

It would be an error to make English ghettos that could not understand their neighbours, so they would be unable to find a job where they had to speak with Valencian speakers (Around 9 million all over the world).

Don’t worry, at the end of high school, students know Spanish, Valencian and English perfectly well.

I hope I have solved your concerns and please feel free to contact me should you have any further questions. Jorge Suay Greses
