Roll up for the Weintaufe Carnival!
EIKENDAL Vineyards in Stellenbosch is celebrating the end of its harvest tomorrow 10am with its Weintaufe Carnival, now a summertime family tradition.
This year visitors can enjoy a day of bucolic bliss fused with exceptional wines, fine street-style fare, games, lucky draws and live music by Newton & Co.
The estate is known for its focused and structured wine pedigree that showcases the best in varietal recognition, and at this laid-back fête its multi-crowned chardonnay will steal the show as the estate’s first wine of the new vintage.
“Come to our winemaking playground and share in the fruits of our labour,” says cellarmaster Nico Grobler, who will baptise the latest arrival. Then visitors will be able to sample it straight from the barrel. Food offerings will be prepared by the restaurant, Cucina di Giovanni, famous for its delicious Italian fare.
Complimentary tractor rides to soak up all the features of a welloiled wine farm, grape stomping and golfing action at the dam will add to a merry day out. There will be a strong focus on children’s entertainment so Mom and Dad can relax at the water’s edge and savour the latest vintages on offer.
Between all the popcorn and ice cream treats, the little ones can enjoy arts and crafts. Entertainment will range from face painting and cookie decorating, to clowning around on the jungle gym or jumping castle.
Since the establishment of the cellar in 1981 and subsequent modernising of the vineyards, Eikendal has become known for producing consistently excellent wines. These include reds, such as the Classique flagship blend; whites, like the award-winning chardonnay; a radiant rosé and an MCC, all of which will be available for purchase.
You can get tickets at the gate (which opens at 10am). They cost R80 a person, including a free glass and tasting from the barrel plus all the entertainment. Under 18s get in for free. Remember the sunscreen, bring a picnic blanket and claim your spot ahead of the chardonnay christening at noon.
