Is that a butterfly on my scone? Fun and games in Klapmuts

-

outside the city was exciting. I’m not too fussy when it comes to food, particularly breakfast. A fruit salad or cereal usually gets me going.

The restaurant is cosy and intimate. You have a choice to eat inside or outside on the balcony. We ate inside because it was a bit chilly .

Our table already had menus and the waitress attended to us immediately. I was not in the mood for a heavy breakfast, so I ordered a freshly baked scone with cream and jam. The rest of my family ordered a farm-style breakfast: an omelette, boerewors, bacon, tomato and French fries.

I had a guava juice to wash down my scone. The food took some time as everything is home made.

So while we waited we enjoyed the view of the stunning indoor garden and beautiful landscaping. When our food arrived the scone was freshly baked as promised and reminded me of my grandmother’s kitchen. The scone fell apart as I cut into it.

The fresh cream and jam topped it all off beautifully. The jam wasn’t too sweet, it was just perfect. Every bite took me back to my childhood, and made me miss my grandmother’s baking.

Butterfly World is home to butterflies from countries such as Malaysia, Costa Rica, the Philippines and China. We went in to the enclosed garden where butterflies flew around us or rested on exotic plants.

Adults pay R65, children R37, a family R167 ( two adults and two children), pensioners/college students R59 and children under the age of three enter free.

If you love nature and animals or you are just looking for something to do with the kids that will not break the bank, Butterfly World is worth a visit. I know I’m going back.
