I was reminded of this last week while popping into JC Brasserie for supper one night.

I noticed their “Cockadoodledoo” menu placed next to “Rustic grub”. And right at the top of the list was Ouma’s Flapjacks.

I called ahead of my breakfast visit this week and learnt they served breakfast all day.

The waitress took our order on a fancy little touch-screen device: I ordered my flapjacks with filter coffee (R15) and my friend ordered from the pub lunch special menu.

He had a chicken schnitzel with chips for R49.

The pub lunch special is until 4pm and also offers dishes like macaroni and cheese and bangers and mash.

Our food took a long time to arrive and after two visits close to each other I can deduce they have a slow kitchen.

We waited a little more that 20 minutes for our food, which I think is long.

My friend had gorgeous vinegar-soaked slap-chips and I forwardly helped myself to some with Hot Az Hell sauce.

My flapjacks were not wide, but thick; they were more like what I would call hotcakes.

They were thick enough to slice through and appeared to have the texture of cake.

They were bordering on dry, but still very enjoyable with the syrup over them.

The filter coffee was served in a mug which was pleasing. The brew was slightly on the burnt so side, so I didn’t order a second cup.

I have little to complain about – that was flapjacks and coffee for R45.

As a tasty starter, do try their creamy cheesy or mozzi poppers (R15).
