R50 000 reward for fugitive Turk

Shooting suspect believed to be back in Cape

- CARYN DOLLEY

ONE OF the Western Cape’s most controversial businessmen has offered a R50 000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a Turkish man who wounded him during a bizarre shootout in Bellville 18 months ago.

Former bouncer boss and businessman Andre Naude told Weekend Argus yesterday he believed Bora Unuvar, the shooter who fled the country after the attack, had recently returned to Cape Town.

This was why Naude yesterday announced he was offering the reward.

“I’d love to hear (Unuvar’s) side of the story,” Naude said.

If Unuvar is back in the country, it would mean he managed to return illegally or under a different name as there is a warrant for his arrest which would have seen him stopped at any border point.

Authorities are on high alert in case he is in Cape Town.

The shootout happened in the parking area of a Bellville pub and eatery on October 4, 2014.

Police said prior to this Unuvar and a friend were involved in an altercation in the establishment, and were removed from the premises.

Police alleged Unuvar then fetched a gun from his car and shot one of the security staff.

Naude and martial arts fighter Jan “The Giant” Nortje were both wounded in the shooting, although both denied knowing Unuvar or having an argument with him.

Unuvar was also wounded in the shooting.

He absconded from hospital and a warrant for his arrest was later issued, with the Hawks saying he was wanted for attempted murder.

Yesterday Naude said Unuvar may now go under another name.

Unuvar’s apparent Facebook page, under the name Çagtan Ünüvar which he also used, said he lived in Cape Town.

In comments under a photograph of a car parked in front of a house and posted on March 22, one of his Facebook friends asked if he was “still here” and for Unuvar to phone them. He replied that he would. Weekend Argus yesterday tried to contact Unuvar on a cellphone number he had used, but was unsuccessful.

About two weeks after the shooting a man claiming to be Unuvar told Weekend Argus in a statement he sent via WhatsApp that he was aware the Hawks were searching for him.

“I am not a fugitive. I was told my life may be in danger because of other guys. I will be awaiting a green light from my attorney to begin a legal process and be sure there is no life threat,” he said.

Anyone with information about Unuvar’s whereabouts should call the Hawks on 021 918 3484.
