Tau’s Tae Bo workout is what your heart needs
UNLIKE the conventional aerobics class that burns between 300 and 400 calories, Tae Bo has been characterised as an excellent cardiovascular workout whose high-energy movements will get you to burn an effective 500 to 800 calories in an hour.
Other benefits include toning and defining the body’s musculature, while improving one’s balance, flexibility and co-ordination.
“It is the first workout of its kind that incorporates many different workouts from different disciplines,” said Lucas Tau, a Tae Bo lead instructor who discovered the Tae Bo fitness programme in 2005.
Tau is using his house as a training facility after realising that his area offers no halls or areas where he can introduce and train local residents. Using his garage, Tau is able to accommodate people who can’t afford to join fancy gyms.
As a sixth dan black belt karate instructor, Tau also trains people who are interested in karate. The gym can accommodate 30 people, and they train from Monday to Thursday.
Tae Bo will be participating for the first time at the Arnold Classic Africa at the Sandton Convention Centre.
“I believe this will be a real breath of fresh air for the audience as they will be seeing a more extensive display of the sport. The team will be bringing motivation and education on how Tae Bo co-ordinates the body and the mind. The truth is that Tae Bo is a challenging workout, but it is a challenge that brings a sense of accomplishment. Once you have finished the workout, you have a greater sense of self-worth and motivation,” Tau said.
Four years ago, four South African bodybuilding and sports enthusiasts collaborated to make the Arnold Sports Festival a reality on the African continent.
In partnership with the Gauteng provincial government and the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, the City of Joburg, Crawford College and Gentle Giant Promotions, Arnold Classic Africa affords athletes the opportunity to compete in an international competition against participants from all continents.
Like its global counterparts, the African rendition embraces numerous sporting codes and promotes these through demonstrations, contests, record attempts and sports celebrities over three days each May.
