It’s cheaper to get Tambo, Mandela statues from China

- MUHAMMAD OMAR Durban North

IT CLEARLY seems eThekwini Municipality believes it a priority to honour former president Jacob Zuma with an eThekwini recording of his musical hits and two statues at R20 million each.

Were the statues put out to tender? I’m pretty sure you can get a “knockoff” version commissioned in China at a much cheaper price.

If your iPhones are made in China, who cares where a statue is made?

In fact, driving in Durban North I saw metallic figures of ANC heroes displayed on the freeway.

A concern I have is why use such a dangerous accident-prone spot when an ordinary park in uMhlanga would have sufficed?

In fact, why is no street in the new uMhlanga/Sibaya precinct named after a Struggle hero and why is there no memorial there?

This is the South Africa that was fought for in the liberation Struggle.

Why is there no statue or even any recognition for the late Robert Sobukwe or any of his PAC colleagues?

Sharpeville Day or the March public holiday was a result of the brilliant and peaceful leadership of the late “Prof” Sobukwe, after which the reality of South Africa, as a brutal apartheid state, was exposed to the world.

The likes of Mandela and Tambo were leaders who followed in Sobukwe’s footsteps.
