Girls choose money over love today

- NOKUTHULA ZWANE

MY FRIEND is going through the worst kind of breakup, where all he can think about is how his woman left him for an older, richer man – a blesser.

A blesser is like a sugar daddy. He’s an older man who often has multiple girlfriends, who he spoils with gifts in exchange for sex and companionship.

As a friend, I should be able to help him pick up the pieces of his shattered heart and tell him that everything will be okay and she will come back.

Truth is, she isn’t coming back if a blesser snatched her away. Honey, she’s gone.

I’m asking myself: What did he do so wrong to have his heart crushed like this?

If fiction serves me right, a book by Angela Makholwa called The Blessed Girl takes you on a journey that is so often followed. The book perfectly describes my friend’s fate.

When you’re accustomed to the finer things in life – designer shoes, sparkling wine, VIP lounges, exotic holidays abroad, a luxury penthouse, expensive wheels – what independent young woman in her right mind would want to let go of that?

Certainly not the beautiful, ambitious and superstreet smart Bontle Tau, the girl who has used her good looks and winning charm all her life to get exactly what she wants.

Very few people consider the emotional effects that the #Blessed phenomenon has on the men who may not be able to spend on their women, and I don’t think the young women actually care. We are living in a world where people choose money over love.
