- MOTORING STAFF

SOUTH Africa finally has a Gumball Rally for regular Joes. The Gumboot Rally, which takes place from April 1 to 5, is a 3 000km road trip that will take in some of the best scenery SA has to offer.

“We have not fixed any of the routes and participants are free to choose any route they like in the hope of gaining an advantage on other competitors or taking in more of SA’s magnificent scenery,” says Gumboot Rally manager Carel Cloete.

The Gumboot Rally will kick off in Pretoria and make its way through Welkom, Durban, East London, and George with the final stop being Cape Town, where there will be an awards ceremony and “send-off” bash. At each stop the organisers will provide campsites and food for the participants.

The rally is open to any street-legal car with a modest entry fee of R5 000 per vehicle. Participants can enter their cars in one of four categories. These are; supercars, vintage cars (pre-1973), any street-legal car and motorbikes. Entry is limited to 150 cars. Each car can carry a maximum of four people during the rally.

The rally will benefit the Reach for a Dream Foundation and boasts sponsors like Renault and Tsogo Sun, which will offer those participants who prefer not to camp discounted rates on accommodation.

The 3 000km Gumboot Rally will have two special stages. The first will be at Phakisa international raceway and the second will be at the East London grand prix circuit where participants can try their cars on the tracks. There’s also something special planned for each checkpoint.
