THE Cofimvaba police made a major breakthrough when they arrested three suspects for the alleged hijacking of a local furniture shop’s truck loaded with furniture last Wednesday at about 4pm, police said.

Spokesman lieutenant Namhla Mdleleni said police followed a tip-off of a hijacking in the Cala area and spotted a suspicious white Polo Playa coming from the opposite direction.

“Two occupants exited the Polo and started firing shots at the police and the police returned fire. While the police were on the shoot out (sic), a truck believed to be the hijacked one came to a stop near them and the driver ran away.”

With the help of the community, the third suspect was also arrested, Mdleleni said.

The trio are between the ages of 30 and 35.

“The police recovered the hijacked truck, suspected stolen vehicle, two unlicensed firearms and ammunition and suspected stolen goods,” she said, adding that various cases were under in- vestigation.

She said on circulation of information among the police, it was discovered the trio was also linked to criminal activities in the Western Cape.

“The cases range from robbery with a firearm, business robbery, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of suspected stolen property.”

Cofimvaba cluster commander colonel Gcinikhaya Taleni commended the community of Rwantsana and the police for the quick response.
