Solomons has his eyes on the prize

DILLAN Solomons is unhappy with Kaizer Chiefs’ fall from grace in recent years, stating that he wants to be part of the team that’ll end their trophy drought.

Chiefs are one of the biggest brands in South African football, thanks to a trophy-laden cabinet and being the most followed club in the country.

But they haven’t been at their best in recent years, enduring a seven-year trophy drought.

The club has made several changes in technical and playing personnel as the result. Amakhosi appointed club legend Arthur Zwane as the new coach, while they’ve cut out the “deadwood”, signing young blood to rediscover ‘Chiefs’ way’.

Those new faces include Solomons (22) who was signed from Swallows FC at the end of last season after helping the Birds to avoid relegation.

With the new technical team and players, Chiefs have blown hot and cold so far as they are languishing in the bottom half of the league with 11 points on the board.

But there’s still a long way to go in the season. The league is on matchday eight while the first legs of the MTN8 semi-final will be played this weekend.

Being in the

MTN8 semis is part of the reason why Solomons has insisted that they are still on course to turn around their fortunes around, even though they’ve had an inconsistent start.

“In the last few weeks, we’ve had that conversation of how we want to be remembered. We know the struggles of not winning trophies,” he said.

“So, I want to be part of the team that will say ‘we’ve ended the drought’. We have that on our minds at the moment that we want to win trophies.”

Solomons wants to help Chiefs win trophies right away, beginning with the Wafa Wafa Cup next month.

Amakhosi will face AmaZulu in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-finals on Sunday at FNB Stadium, while they know a win will edge them closer to the promised land.

But that’s easier said than done. Usuthu pose a threat to Chiefs, especially after they played out a goalless draw in the league earlier this month.

Moreover, reaching the final doesn’t guarantee that they’ll win the Wafa Wafa cup as they’ll face either Mamelodi Sundowns or rivals Orlando Pirates.
