War to end all wars is looming just beyond the horizon

- FAROUK ARAIE | Johannesburg

POLITICAL divisions and hostilities in Europe and Asia have reached new levels. Tensions are running high, with apocalyptic rhetoric emerging from all sides. The unending, primordial conflict between Russia, China and other powers will increase tension across the heartland of the various battlefields, and could serve as a catalyst for World War III.

Any miscalculation or acts of political brinkmanship will lead to carnage unprecedented in modern warfare. Ukraine and Taiwan have now become pawns in the deadly game of political chess ominously unfolding, as nuclear powers compete for total control. As a bolt of lightning that flashes across the darkening sky is witness both to the approaching storm and to the unbearable tension which is giving birth to it, so the fires of conflicts have thrown a lurid light on the menacing return of a possible major military clash that could envelope the entire area, with fatal and deadly global consequences.

The change of military power in the contested areas will propel potential conflict in the area into a new and deadly duel. Political gambling by local and regional powers will cost them more than anyone can pay. Any escalation will only lead to counter retaliation, which will be a tempting invitation to aspiring powers to intervene. It will be a perpetual war. Europe and Asia will become involved as the current order of battle widens, the war arena will be engulfed in a sea of blood. The current ongoing wars across the entire combat areas are part of a military road map which is ultimately directed at China and Russia.

Millions will perish, the world economy will be shattered, oil will reach $150 per barrel. Any new, immense war will escalate out of control; no amount of military might will be able to contain it. The cradles of civilisations and religions will cease to exist. Famine is now being used as a weapon in all wars currently in progress. Africa, Yemen and Afghanistan are becoming the world’s biggest impending disasters. Military bombardment has devastated their economies and food-producing capability. It is estimated that 30 million people face starvation as food supplies dwindle. Food production is non-existent as the war continues unabated.

Lack of food is the biggest killer in many wars. In terms of international law, the UN is in danger of becoming an accessory to starvation. Total and utter devastation looms over the horizon. There will be no pleas for a ceasefire as humanity ceases to exist.
