FISHING IS WARMING UP WITH THE START OF THE SUMMER HEAT

-

THE bass fishing is on a different level at the moment with some amazing fish being landed daily. The carp are keeping social media full up and the trout are feeling the summer heat.

The carp are greedy at the moment with the summer heat putting them into feeding mode. The warmer weather makes the carp a bit more active with the catch numbers revealing a rise in the smaller fish.

This time of year is the time for the conventional anglers. You can go to most of the KZN venues and fill your keep net in a short amount of time. The sweeter the flavour the quicker the bite. Look at flavours like banana and honey and add a bit of molasses to your feed mix.

The specimen anglers can get pestered by the smaller fish so it is time to fish bigger baits. Use either a bigger boilie (20mm) or a chain of smaller baits. This will limit the amount of smaller fish you can catch.

The bass season has been incredible. The post spawn is over and the summer season is on. The warmer water splits the fish into either the shallows or the deeper water structures. The two groups can both be targeted for a big bag so the choice is yours. The deep water fish are best targeted using your electronics and fishing to specific fish/spots. Use methods such as drop shots, jigs or deep cranking.

The shallow water fish can be targeted by moving through likely area with a variety of baits. The warmer days can be fished with frogs in the heavy cover but most of the shallows can be picked with jigs or creature baits.

The trout are starting to slow down with the warmer water pushing them into the deeper areas of the dams. It is not all doom and gloom though as the fish are still eager to feed and the insect hatches on the warmer nights will see some amazing dry fly activity. For the dry flies you do not need 10 boxes with every size of each pattern. This is great to have and it will probably land you more fish if you know what to use when but a small selection of representative flies will have you fishing more and changing less. Look at elk hair caddis imitations and foam terrestrials. The deeper water is best fished with beaded streamers such as woolly buggers. Tight lines and screaming reels.
