Thought for the day

- Rod Smith

If you scatter thorns, don’t go barefoot. – Italian Proverb

MY SON is entering Grade 8 at the school where I teach and hold a limited administrative role.

One result of this serendipitous adventure is that my sons’ closest friends (both of them attended the school) are also my students whom I have known all or most of their lives. While I am sometimes prompted to remind them I try to resist saying things like “I taught your sister before you were born”.

The added joy is that these same people know me very well too.

Sometimes it is what they notice and find fit for comment that I find heartwarming.

Yesterday – on our annual trip to a water park with my son and .................. 031 308 2332 ............ Fikile-Ntsikelelo Moya .............. Bruce Colly ......... Philani Mazibuko ....................... Billy Suter ...... Greg Hutson Simon Osler two of his closest friends – one of the young men asked me if I had a boss at the school.

I probed, seeking some stimulus for his question. He said, “Mr Smith, you are the only person in the school that no one tells what to do.”

His insight struck a well of deep joy in me.

There are at least four of five layers of authority above me (perhaps more) and I am a man in willing submission to the structures within which I work. Thank God that loving what you do every day looks like no one is your boss. ............... 031 308 2004 ................... 080 020 4711 .......................................... 031 308 2022 ................ mercnews@inl.co.za www.facebook.com/themercurysa www.twitter.com/themercurysa
