The Mercury

Chef gunned down in Durban suburb

- Bernadette Wolhuter

A DURBAN chef and father of three was gunned down in Morningside yesterday afternoon.

Ernest Gogoe, who was in his late fifties, was on his way home from work when he was shot dead on the corner of Anerley and Percy Osborne roads just before 3pm.

By the time The Mercury arrived at the scene, just before 5pm, his body was still at the roadside and a small crowd had gathered.

He had been covered and a mortuary van was on its way.

“He was just in my office,” said John Schlebusch, who worked with Gogoe at the Bill Buchanan Association for the Aged.

Schlebusch was the head of department in the kitchen and Gogoe was the head chef, he explained.

“He was a good man,” he said.

Gogoe had worked at the association for 31 years.

“He knew what he was doing,” Schlebusch added.

Gogoe’s brother, Japhet, had rushed to the scene. He appeared shaken and traumatised.

“He was a lovely man,” Japhet said of his brother.

Gogoe, of KwaMashu’s K Section, was married and his two sons and one daughter were all of school-going age.

His wife had been notified and was devastated, Japhet said.

Netcare911’s Chris Botha said paramedics arrived at the scene and found the man lying on the pavement.

“Paramedics declared the man dead at the scene.”

Police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said a case of murder had been opened at the Durban Central police station.

The victim had been shot in the chest by unknown people, she said, and the motive was not known.

No arrests had been made.
