Vibey business relay hits Durban’s streets for 30th year

-

THE backing of sponsors and the support of the Durban business community for 30 years is the legacy that will be upheld when the 2015 KPMG Business Relay hits Durban’s streets next month.

Event organiser Wayne Riddin says the relay, to be held on Saturday, November 14, is the longest-running one of its kind in the country.

“The KPMG Business Relay is unique, and has evolved and sustained through three decades of the city’s growth,” he says.

The 5km route has changed to include new developments such as the upgraded beachfront promenade, Blue Lagoon, and new routes leading past Moses Mabhida Stadium towards the finish at Kings Park Stadium grounds.

KPMG will partner again this year with beverage sponsors Coo-ee, The Sharks and The Mercury, while providing an awareness and fundraising platform for non-profit public benefit organisation the MRP Foundation.

The 2015 KPMG Business Relay marks the start of a three- to fiveyear plan to build the entity’s corporate social investment strategy and encourage participation by a wider sector of the Durban community, including high schools, development running teams and corporate running clubs.

The last category fits into KPMG’s wider global focus with its #kpmgfit4business initiative, which is now being launched. Sponsors will also be bringing five young athletes to the city in support of the athletics academy at Vorentoe High School in Joburg.

The academy has produced some of the country’s top athletes, including Mapaseka Makhanya, the 2013 winner of the SA Sportswoman of the Year award, Ruben Ramolefi, the South African record-holder for the 3 000m steeple chase, and as many as 18 athletes for the Gauteng Schools teams over the past two years.

However, the event still remains at heart a fun and affordable way for all company staff to enjoy a team-building afternoon.

Each running team of five and walking or wheelchair team of three covers an easy, flat route of 5km.

The camaraderie and encouragement en route spills over into a festive marquee village where many companies enjoy year-end parties.
