Life through their eyes
Pupils catch dynamic images on cellphones
THIS year’s Culture@ Kearsney photographic competition, which is open to all high school pupils, has produced some inspiring results, highlighting the reality seen through the eyes of our youth.
The pictures are a little taste of the works which will be on display.
The “Documenting our Lives” competition encourages unconventional photographers to use only mobile devices (iPad, tablet, cellphone or GoPro) or DSLR cameras.
This year’s categories are my school, my friends, classic black and white portrait, sport and all its drama, and video of moments.
More than 165 entries were submitted by photographers aged 13 to 19 who have used the opportunity to show their creativity.
Some outstanding entries were received from Hillcrest High School, Glenwood, St Johns DSG, Northlands Girls’ High, Westville Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools, Curro Hillcrest, Maris Stella, Star College, Danville, and Kearsney College, as well as two schools not in KwaZulu-Natal, Nelspruit Hoërskool and St Andrews High School (Welkom).
The Culture@Kearsney programme is a celebration of the vibrant and dynamic arts scene in KZN schools. It aims to enrich the development of the arts in all its forms, including one-act plays, a dance festival, art, and photographic competitions, as well as a choral festival.
The judging panel comprises independent leaders in the visual arts industry who have no affiliation to Kearsney or any school that submits work.
There will be an exhibition of the photographic entries from September 19 to 26 at Kearsney in Botha’s Hill. Entry is free.
