WHERE ONCE THERE WAS A LOVELY HOME

-

This week’s picture of old Durban for our then and now feature was supplied by Val Hopwood of Westville. In the accompanying letter she says: “This is a photo of my mother’s family house, Rydale, 48 South Ridge Road, Durban.

“My grandfather, Dr Andrew Walbrugh, was an ear, nose and throat specialist at Entabeni. He was also a keen polo player and stabled his horses behind the house. The horses were regularly walked to the beach for exercise.

“I’m not sure when the house was demolished but it was replaced by a block of flats, Ridgegrove.” The old family home is pictured on the right and Ridgegrove, far right, was shot by Jacques Naude this week.

The Independent on Saturday is making a special appeal to readers who have old pictures from elsewhere in the province, as well as those of Durban, to please send them in to us for consideration.

If any of our readers are featured in the old picture, we will do our best to recreate the scene with them in it again.

Readers sending in pictures digitally can address them, with the relevant information, to satmail@inl.co.za.

Pictures should preferably be about 1MB.

If the pictures are in hard copy form, they can be posted to The Editor, Old Pictures, The Independent on Saturday, PO Box 47549, Greyville, 4023.
