Van Vuuren brings show with a twist

- Simtembile Mgidi Convos &

Renowned comedian Rob van Vuuren is returning home to headline and launch the inaugural Convos & Comedy Show at The One Room Music and Comedy Club this weekend.

The first instalment of the bimonthly show will take place at 6pm on Sunday and will also offer a live podcast to expose local talent to an international audience.

Van Vuuren said he was stoked about performing in his home town and looking forward to the nostalgic drive to the Bay, where he has also slotted in a shoot along the beachfront for a new television advert.

He applauded award-winning Motherwell comedian Siya Seya’s efforts in partnership with The One Room for developing comedy in the Eastern

Cape, and said he was looking forward to performing standup after an absence from the Friendly City.

“I will cover a lot of bases. “It [the show] goes from the surreal to the very real, to the absurd, but it is going to be a great joy,” he said.

“It’s an awesome room; great line-up; the podcast; there will be some banter so it is going to be great.”

He said the podcast added an extra element to the show.

“A podcast, which has exploded globally over the past 10 years or so, deepens the experience for the audience.

“They get access to comedy on different levels, giving you insight into comedy from the comedians’ perspective.

“I love listening to comedy podcasts, it also offers the comedians that many more channels to get their voices out there

to explore a global audience.

“It is amazing how the internet and social media can open up the world to you — all of a sudden you are not just playing for Gqeberha, you’re playing for an audience all over the world.

“That can happen easily in some cases. My Namastae Bae went viral and now I have fans all over the world and that exploded my social media presence,” Van Vuuren said.

Seya said the idea for the show stemmed from a French comedy clip where opinions and banter between performers and audiences continued after the show.

“I said this was a great idea, because if we normally do our jokes, put out our opinions, the show ends and we will meet in the next show.

“Now we will get to sit down on the second half of the show with the audience, they will get to participate and the whole room will be a comedy show as a whole.”

Seya said the current era of podcasts and social media spanned many new and innovative ideas which should be embraced by performers.

“The internet proved that you just need content, your niche market. There is no need to relocate to Johannesburg or Cape Town any more.” Tickets for the
