Enough talk, it’s time for action

- Jason Gerber, Lorraine, Gqeberha

Mr President.

As a concerned citizen of SA, I speak for many who have lost their faith in this once great country with its great potential.

To put it bluntly, this country is becoming a laughing stock.

Not only in our nation, but internationally as well.

It saddens me to know that our country is deteriorating because of the policies and laws you have passed, as well as who you’ve associated yourself with as president.

On the SONA live stream 2023, you mentioned that “hope must be sustained to overcome difficult times”.

I’m inclined to agree with you. But, I also believe in results.

The reality is, hope is not enough any more.

Words are not enough any more. It is time for action. Apartheid is over.

In order for us as a nation, a nation of culturally diverse citizens, to truly rejuvenate this country, we need to let go of the past.

We must never forget it, but we must be able to put it behind us and ensure that we do not repeat history’s mistakes.

Many people feel hatred towards the Apartheid government and blame them for SA’s current problems.

This is evident in the way people of colour treat whites, who are the minority in this country.

Our white people in our country have a say too.

Apartheid was a terrible political system that treated its non-white citizens unjustly, yes.

It lasted for 46 years. However, white people are no longer your enemy.

We have not been your enemy since 1994 when Nelson Mandela won the democratic presidential election.

People of all races across the country must join together so that this country can be a country many can be proud to call home.

In 2001, Eskom was named the world’s best power company... and look where we are now.

Our rand value exchange rate used to be only a few rand from the American dollar! What has happened? The state of our nation is crumbling every day.

I had to write you this because as a concerned citizen of SA, a biracial citizen of SA, I say no more.

The time for hope is over. Start doing better now! This country deserves a leader who is inclusive of all its citizens, who hears both sides of the story, will remain objective and that will make decisions that affect our nation, with logic and reason.

As a 17-year-old boy from Gqeberha, a student who happens to take history, I’ll leave you with this quote; “The way to get started, is by doing”.

Save our country, Mr President.

Corruption is too high. Our unemployment rate is too high. Gender-based violence is too high.

Load-shedding is our new normal, water is becoming too scarce.

Our people are fleeing, just like how the immigrants fled from their homelands, in search for the American dream.

Our educated are abandoning their country because our country has abandoned them.

It is time to do better. Our country deserves better.

It is time to move on from apartheid and it is time to start building our future together, so that it may one day be a great nation again.

This is my hope for our dying country.
